A few words from Helen Skourti, Fraser Charter Specialist, Greece
The islands of Kimolos, Poliegos, and Milos are those I especially encourage all to discover.
As you walk from the port to the main town called Chorio, you will notice a structure of a castle. Until the end of the 19th century, this area was the only inhabited part of the island. Narrow streets, small white and blue houses and little shops lead to the square of the village. The most famous tavern here is called “I kali kardia”, (the good heart in Greek). The Owner will stand in the entrance and will sit with you and will make you feel right at home.
When visiting Kimolos, it goes without saying that you will spend time on Poliegos Island, located just 1 nm north west. It is the largest uninhabited island of the Aegean sea and its goat population maintains Poliegos as a barren island. The dramatic landscapes form magnificent bays and many sea-surface caves, with the most amazing waters of the Aegean. The absolute tranquility could be only interrupted by the sound of the goats or monk seals which find refuge in Poliegos. On the west side of the island you can find the only accessible beach, a perfect location for a beach set-up and BBQ, while you watch the sun set.
Milos Island, just 5 nm from Kimolos and Poliegos, is one of the most special destinations worldwide. Its volcanic past has painted the beaches red, pink and orange.
The highlights of Milos are Kleftiko and Sarakiniko. It is said that the daunting pirates of the Middle Ages had their hideouts in the caves of Kleftiko. The lunar like landscape of Sarakiniko is simply out of this world. These white rock formations and the endless caves which surround you are the ultimate location to anchor with the yacht. Perfect for cliff jumping as well.
A tender ride away is the area of Pollonia, a small village with many picturesque taverns on the water, with Armenaki tavern standing out for its great wine list and cuisine.
For the sunset lovers, the hike from Plaka – the capital of Milos – to the ruins of the castle and the church of Panagia Thalassitra (the protector of the seamen) offer one of the most mesmerising panoramic views.
